[Review] 2014 Trek 1 Series Road Bikes

2014 Trek 1 Series Look More and More Like High End Bikes

For 2014 Trek has impressed us by giving every Trek 1 series frame a carbon fork. The frame remains Aluminum, but it has been redesigned. The down tube now comes with a curved leading edge and a truncated trail. It's chopped off square at the back in a similar way to the KVF tubing that Trek use on their Madone and Speed Concept bikes. Three different 1 series are available: 1.5, 1.2, and 1.1.

The 1.1 is the cheapest road bike that Trek produces. 100 Series Alpha Aluminum frame with a Trek carbon road fork, Shimano 2300 8-speed drivetrain with Vuelta Corsa, 50/34 (compact) crankset, Bontrager Approved alloy rims and Bontrager T1 700x23c tires.

Other features of the 1 Series include Rack and fender mounts, H2 Geometry and Shimano Claris (1.1), Shimano Sora (1.2) and Shimano Tiagra (1.5) front and rear derailleurs. Bontrager fills out the rest of the componentry to keep it light on your wallet too. Strong, light, exhilirating, and race ready.

If you've been riding for a while and looking for your second or third road bike, you may want to check out some of Trek's other 2014 bikes.

2014 Trek Speed Concept - Simply. Beautiful.

Trek 2014 Time Trial Bike Mixes Fashion and Function

Speed Concept

For the time trial stages, Trek has the Speed Concept. The bike has been around for a good few years now, but had an update last year (for the 2014 model year) to reduce the weight by a claimed 437g. Trek reckon the aerodynamics and reduced frontal area have improved its performance across a range of yaw angles.
The Speed Concept heralded in Trek’s Kammtail Virtual Foil (KVF) tube profiles that see the trailing edge chopped off, tricking the air into acting as if it's still there. The tube shaping has been tweaked on the new frame, and they have added fillet’s between the main frame tubes to increase side surface area to reduce drag at higher yaw angles. This also stiffens the frame.
Trek have reduced the frontal area - down 30% they say - and taken material from the seat tube and down tube - all without any reduction in stiffness, according to Trek's men in lab coats. All cables are routed internally, and the battery for a Shimano Di2 groupset is housed inside the frame.

Parts and components

With Trek supplying the frames, Bontrager will supply the wheels, stems, handlebars, saddles and tyres. They’ll be using the tubular Aeolus 3.0 wheelset for a lot of the regular road stages, going to deeper or shallower section rims dependent on conditions, course profile and rider preferences.
We’ve seen a few new products coming out recently as a direct result of the team involvement - you get an awful lot of feedback from guys doing 30,000km of riding and racing every year, and to product developers that's invaluable. The pros can also be very fussy, and with personal sponsorship deals for saddles less common these days, this can lead to new saddle models being introduced. A case in point is the Serano saddle launched last December, first spotted on Andy Schleck early last year.
And we've seen the new helmet that will be ideal for the Spring Classics, the Bontrager Velocis AW. It's the same as the regular Velocis helmet, just with a new one-piece shell with the vents all blocked up to prevent rain and cold wind getting in. The helmet will only be available through the Trek Race Shop, the outlet for limited runs of equipment built specifically for the Trek Factory Racing team.
Shimano will continue to support the team, and will supply most of the team with its top flight Dura-Ace Di2 11-speed groupset. However, not all are happy to switch to electronic, and Cancellara prefers to remain on a mechanical Dura-Ace groupset.
Once again, German tyre manufacturer Schwalbe will supply the team with tyres. With the company heavily investing in tubeless tyres with the excellent Ultremo and more recent One (which it reckons is the fastest tyre it has ever produced) and Bontrager producing tubeless-ready rims, it’ll be interesting to see if any of the team ride tubeless throughout the season.

[VIDEO] Who Has This Much Time On Their Hands? Oh, Canadians.

World's First Human Powered Helicopter

The American Helicoptor Society's Igor I. Sikorsky had offered a $250,000 prize for anyone who could create a human-powered Helicopter.

Aviation history was made on June 13th by the Canadian Aero Velo team. From humble Kickstarter-funded beginnings, this team is largely comprised of students from the University of Toronto.

The Sikorsky Prize represents a monumental challenge that requires a level of aerodynamic efficiency that is unheard of in commercial helicopters. A successful Sikorsky Prize helicopter will be able to hover on less than one horsepower.

"No one knows better than we do the enormously difficult engineering and human performance challenges that must be overcome in order to meet these flight requirements." the team said in a statement. "We salute this historic accomplishment of the AeroVelo team and the intense dedication, innovation, research and hard work we know it required."
Dr. Todd Reichert

The team’s quad-copter design was created from a frame made of carbon-fiber/Vectran while the blades of the Atlas were made from polystyrene, balsa wood and polyester film. These elements were then tied together by a bicycle at the center of the machine. Dr. Todd Reichert, one of the leaders of the team, pedaled to lift the AeroVelo Atlas for 64.11 seconds. The craft reached an altitude of 10.8 feet and drifted only 32 feet during the flight, which took place on June 13 inside a field house in Vaughan, Ontario.

[REVIEW] 2014 Trek Superfly 8 - Bumstead's Bicycles

An Easy-Riding Bike With A Proven Track Record: Your Superfly Awaits.

Trek's Superfly line of mountain bikes raises the bar for 29er hardtail MTB performance.

The Superfly 8 is the highest level aluminum bike in the line-up, and it was bred with racing in mind. It's speed is only half the story though; it's handling and specs make it fully capable when the trail get's rowdy. Trek's Alpha Platinum Aluminum frame is hydroformed to create the most sophisticated shapes for the lightest weight, and are finished using Trek's smooth-weld finishing process. The frame is equipped with G2 geometry and a 100 mm Float up front to lead the way as fast as possible. The bike looks clean and simple thanks to sleek ports at the head tube and near the seat tube, allowing you to run your derailleur housing directly through the frame, keeping the cable protected from the elements and your bike running smooth, clean and quiet.

Eric Melson of Blister Gear Review said this of the Superfly's riding characteristics:

"Right away, I noticed the lateral rigidity of the press-fit bottom bracket and the thru-axle rear end. The power transfer was very impressive, something that's especially noticeable when I'm standing for long periods of time or during short, punchy climbs when I drop a gear and mash.

My position while climbing is low, and I lean forward over the front wheel, which helps me power up steep grades. This bike likes to spin, and if you've got the lungs, you can cover some serious ground in the hills. ... I'm confident making techy moves and lifting the front end thanks to the bike's relatively short chainstays, and overall I've appreciated its snappiness and solid power transfer."

The front fork of the 2014 Superfly 8 is the Fox Evolution Series 32 Float w/CTD, damper, 15QR thru axle, custom G2 geometry with 51mm offset and an optional 100mm of travel. When climbing or sprinting, simply turn the lockout switch to the "locked out" position to maintain all the power of your stroke. When descending, turn the lockout to the "fully open" position to eat up most of the bumps and keep you rooted in the ground, rather than be readily tossed in the air. Of course, the 29 inch wheels help with that as well.

Next, the drivetrain is composed of Shimano SLX with a Deore XT Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur, making chain slap and dropped chains a thing of the past. A 2x10 drivetrain gives you plenty of gears to use while saving some weight. The SLX hydraulic disc brakes stop you well, even in muddy or wet conditions. Plus, the newly designed levers are practically a joy to squeeze. Plus, the rear brake caliper is integrated into the chain/seat stays (intended to increase stiffness).

Tubeless-ready wheels, SLX discs and Bontrager Race Lite controls top everything off nicely. Speed, efficiency and fun: Your Superfly awaits!

[Review] The 2014 Trek 8.4 DS Can Do It All!

2014 Trek 8.4 DS - Everything You Could Ever Want In A Single Bike

Many first time bike buyers and people getting back into the sport have trouble deciding between all the options available to them. Some may want a bike that is extra comfortable so they can enjoy their rides to the fullest. Others may want to get a bike that is light and efficient so they can ride back and

That's the beauty of a Dual Sport Bike. Not only is the 2014 Trek DS 8.4 light and strong, it's got a load of great features for the versatile cyclist.

First and foremost is:

Comfort

Trek has constructed their 8.4 DS to be one of the most comfortable rides you will get on a multi-purpose bike. They have focused in on the two areas that are most likely to feel the bumps of the road and the fatigue of the ride: your hands, and your rear end.

• Saddle — The highly versatile Evoke saddle is packed with features engineered especially for the demands of off-road riding. It's edges have been made more durable, its nose made wider (for comfort on more technical terrain), and Off-Road-specific Zone Density foam padding gives proper supportive cushioning. It's gender specific Contour Relief Zone offers extra soft tissue relief.

Don't count it out as a road saddle, though! The Evoke's light weight and Posture Specific Design make it a great choice for road riders who prefer a more upright stance.

forth to work. Still others may want to ride around town and occasionally ride a local trail. There are bikes that will fit all of these categories perfectly, and perhaps one of those is something you'd like.
• Handlebars/Grips —On this model, Trek included ergonomic Bontrager Satellite Elite grips. They take your hand shape into account for more comfort and greater control over the bike. The handlebar and stem are oversized to increase durability and control as well.

• Front Suspension — Unlike the 8.1 DS which has suspension built directly into the frame, the 2014 8.4 DS comes with a SR Suntour NRX front suspension fork, giving you 63mm of travel and preload adjustable lockout. That means you can switch from full suspension; allowing you to easily pass over bumps or curbs in the road, or no suspension; giving you the greatest amount of power transfer and stiffening your front end for climbs and straightaways.

Quality Parts and Construction

•Frame — Gary Fisher style Aluminum frame using a lighter, sportier version of their Alpha Gold Aluminum frame.

• Hydraulic Disc Brakes — This is one of the best features of a Dual Sport Bike. 160mm rotors provide excellent braking power in all conditions — even rainy or muddy! They operate better than mechanical style brakes, and are easier to adjust. The hydraulic discs on this bike are manufactured by Haynes, their Dyno model.

• Drivetrain — The 2014 8.4 DS sees a few upgrades from the 8.3 DS. It gets a Shimano Alivio Crank and a Shimano Deore Rear Derailleur. The front shifters also get upgraded from Acera to Alivio 9-speed for a total of 27 gears.

• Tires — The bike comes specced with Bontrager LT3 700x38c tires, but the frame has plenty of clearance allowing you to swap for beefier (29x1.8") MTB tire without fenders. You can also mount panniers or racks easily.

All of these features can be said to make this bike the best for a variety of terrain. If you want a light bike that offers a smooth, strong ride. What else would you expect from one of the world's premier Bike manufacturers?

[PHOTOS] 2014 Trek Domane 6.2 - Blistering Speed, Incredible Comfort, Amazing Stability

Don't Endure. Conquer With The 2014 Trek Domane 6.2!

Every year, Trek outdoes themselves in every category. The road category is no exception. Trek shows no sign of slowing, and they don't want you to show any signs of slowing either. Let's take a look at the features of the 2014 Trek Domane 6.2.

FIRST: It's worth mentioning that you can customize this bike to your hearts content using Trek's Project One bike building program.

And now, on to the bike itself. Trek points out very clearly on their website that this is the WORLDS best endurance bike. How can they make this claim?

IsoSpeed Technology

The IsoSpeed Decoupler isolates the seat tube from the rest of the frameset, DOUBLING compliance and smoothness with ZERO performance drawbacks.

The IsoSpeed Fork is a one-two punch: 30% more stiffness dramatically improves handling, and the additional compliance from the ride-tuned sweep makes for a smoother ride.

Frame Composition Geometry

• OCLV Carbon (Optimum Compaction, Low Void) manufacturing process, enabling Trek to produce carbon bikes with consistency and quality previously thought impossible.  Each level of OCLV offers the best ride for the money, thanks to an optimal balance of areal weight, stiffness, and compliance. The 600 Series featured on this bike is made of advanced aerospace materials using weight-saving, performance-enhancing technology to achieve the best frame weight/stiffness combinations in the industry.

• As it should be, Trek has developed the world's most comfortable racing geometry. This is the most advanced endurance racing bike after all. They still kept a "racy" feel in the bike, but extended the height of the head tube slightly so you will be more balanced over the bike and greater comfort for your back. Trek has considered every frame construction and fit detail over more than two years to arrive at the perfect balance of speed, stability, and smoothness.

Drivetrain and Other Features

• Obviously we could go on and on about Shimano Ultegra Groupset, but we'd rather talk about how awesome it is to be able to run an integrated electronic drivetrain. "Specific cable stops and proprietary seat tube battery mount or bottom bracket mount allow for a perfect interface with industry-leading electronic drivetrain systems without a single zip tie or strip of tape" -Trekbikes.com These cable connecters are 7mm wide instead of the standard 4mm, though Trek includes specific adapters for both, so you don't need electrical tape. Plus, it makes for a sweet, clean look on the ouside of the bike and keeps your cables out of your way.

• The Ride Tuned seatmast is the lightest, most comfortable solution for day-in, day-out performance and comfort. The no-cut design eliminates traditional seatpost clamping forces, so we can use less material at the seat tube junction, resulting in a lighter frame. Most seatmast systems have to be cut leaving little or no room for adjustablity. This design has more that 10cm of adjustment, making it the most adjustable system on the market.

Comfort

• Trek is concerned about your comfort as well: that's why they placed a Bontrager Race Lite IsoSpeed handlebar to complete this bike. Vibration from rough roads can cause numbness, fatigue, or even loss of control. The integrated IsoZone handlebar pads reduce vibration displacement by 20% while keeping the same ergonomic profile. You get comfort and confident control, with less additional weight than add-on solutions like gel padding or double wrapped tape. The actual bar is ergonomically designed with a compact, shorter drop, a variable radius for a defined braking position, and a flared outer bend for greater control while in the drops.

Come to Bumstead's Bicycles today! We'd love to put you on one of these great Trek bikes and let you take a test ride. We'll be waiting for you!
