Are YOU Addicted to Cycling? Take this Self-Test

10 Tells That You Have A Cycling Addition

1. You spend more on your bike than your car

2. Only the bottom 2/3 of your legs are tan

3. Your surgeon tells you that you need a heart valve replacement; you ask if you can choose between Presta and Schrader

4. You have more pictures of your bike than yourself

5. (Guys) You actually shave your legs to gain a bit more speed. Let's not elaborate on this one.

6. When you are forced to drive, you drive with the windows open or the AC on to simulate riding your bike.

7. There are more jerseys in your closet than dress shirts.

8. Biker chick means black spandex, not leather, and a Trek Lexa, not a Harley.

9. Protein bars start to taste better than Snickers or Twix

Top Cycling Rules Part 1: #1-10 (bicycling.com)

The 50 Golden Rules of Cycling

 (bicycling.com)

1. To corner, enter wide and exit wide.

2. Brake Less
It sounds counter-intuitive, but the harder you yank on the brakes, the less control you have over your bike. The best riders brake well before a corner. Plus, laying off the stoppers force you to focus on key bike cornering skills such as weight distribution, body position, and line choice.

3. Look Where you Want to Go
"When riding a tricky or dangerous section of trail (or road), focus on the path you want your bike to follow, not the rock, tree, or other obstacle you're trying to avoid," says globe-trotting mountain biker Hans Rey.

4. Avoid Helmet Hair
"For God's sake, make sure your hair is under your helmet and not poking out the front," advises Garmin-Cervelo pro Christian Vande Velde

5. Take the Lane
You have a right to the road, so use it! It's safer than riding on the shoulder which is often cracked, covered in gravel, or worse. But don't be a road hog either.

6. Ride with the Best
Before he built his first mountain bike, GARY FISHER was an aspiring road racer. But his decision to stay in America rather than train in Europe derailed his chances of joining the pro peloton. "To be the best at the sport, you need to go where the best are riding," Fisher says. "If you're a mountain biker, spend a couple weeks at Whistler and you will be changed forever. If you're a road rider and want to be a better climber, go to Colorado. Find the best, train with them, watch what they do, and learn their secrets.

7. Set your Suspension — And Check It Often
It's frightening how many riders hit the trail with poorly adjusted forks and shocks. Not only will droopy suspension make your bike feel like a wet noodle, it can also be downright dangerous. A few simple adjustments are all it takes to have your suspension smoothly sucking up bumps. Check online or in your owners manual to get specific instructions on how to set your suspension.

8. Clean Your Shoes Monthly. Also, Wash Your Gloves

9. Warm Up
A slow start primes your engine by directing oxygen from your blood cells to your muscles. Spin easy for 20 to 30 minutes before you begin to hammer.

10. Always Carry Cash
Money can't buy love, but it can buy food, water, a phone call, or a spare tube.

Watch out for the rest of the tips in this five part series - every Tuesday right here on our blog.

2014 All City Nature Boy- All City's Single Speed Cross Racing Monster

"The Nature Boy is our single speed cross racing monster and carries all of the AC hallmarks that you've come to love: beautiful lugged crown fork, classic paint, custom dropouts, and signature headbadge."

It was designed primarily as a race rig, but since All City knew that many of you out there would be using this thing for every day life, they built in additional features to make it more versatile.
You’ll find hidden fender mounts, two sets of bottle bosses (reinforced of course), removeable canti studs, fat tire clearance, and a steel fork that is easily swapped for a carbon model should you want to lighten up for race season."

"Race the crap out of it, ride singletrack, gravel, or commute until your heart’s content. "

The internal rear brake routing not only improves the beauty of the frame, but also provides the ultimate in comfort when grabbing the top tube to shoulder the bike. Once you try it, you’ll wish all of your bikes (where appropriate) had this feature, and since the entire bike is E.D. coated there’s no worries about the cable channel rusting.

They have applied their Signature Rear Dropouts featuring investment cast from stainless steel, featuring built in chain tensioners, and the timeless Hennepin Bridge icon.  Since this is a race bike and All City thinks traditional fender eyelets on race bikes are ugly, they hid the rear ones on the inside of the seat stays, and placed the fork fender eyelets on the blade to keep the look clean.

2014 Trek 7.6 FX Great Specs, Great Look, Great Price!

The FX is Trek's most popular bike, and the 2014 Trek FX 7.6 will be no exception.

Some may call it a fitness bike, but it can be used for so many different things! It's fast, fun, agile, and appeals to roadies, commuters, fitness fans, errand runners, Sunday riders, and more!

Trek's Top end FX models grab popular road bike technology like an E2 tapered head tube and fork and simple, light 2x10 gearing for a fast sporty ride. The E2 head tube tapers from a 1.5" lower to a 1-1/8" upper, placing more material where it matters for the full stiffness of a 1.5" without the added weight. Another weight saving feature is the lightweight front fork with carbon fiber legs to soak up hand-numbing road vibration.

More vibration control is handled by IsoZone technology and super comfortable Bontrager bars and grips encourage you to ride as long as you'd like!

Trek has combined their speedy, yet stable FX geometry with tube shapes inspired by Trek's road heritage for a lightweight ride that's fast and fun.

Why get a 2014 Trek 7.6 FX?

Get fit, ride to work, pull the kids, haul groceries, cruise the neighborhood, and so much more... all on FX.

2014 Trek Session, Superfly, Fuel EX 26, Elite and Stache

Trek World 2014: What's New? What's staying the same?

(pictures from bikeradar.com and imbikemag.com)

Trek has announced at their Annual Trek World event that they will no longer be "rushing to finish product in time for a deadline, and no more will your bike become obsolete when the calendar ticks by. Instead ... bikes will be released as and when they are ready" (www.imbikemag.com)

Now you can buy a new Trek bike feeling confident that it won't depreciate as greatly over the course of the year. Sure, the bikes will be updated, and there may still be some excitement surrounding a bike launch, but Trek wants to make sure their technologies are at their full potential before releasing them, ensuring that you get the best products at the right time.

What does this mean? For us, it means that the Session, Superfly Full Suspension, Fuel EX 26, Elite and Stache (2013 Stache 7 Review Here) FRAMES will remain unchanged for 2014, but we will be seeing some new color schemes and trickle down componentry.

Trek has embraced all three wheel sizes in their new range to show how well each wheel size works in each category.

Here's a breakdown from IMbikemag.com:

At an entry level hardtail price point the X-Caliber now owns the show, 29-inch wheels and bikes to suit almost any pocket in terms of pricing.

Once you tip over the X-Caliber range, the Superfly range begins. Again a 29-inch hardtail bike that has been tweaked for this year aimed firmly at the XC market with 100mm of front end travel. Alongside the Superfly hardtail is the Superfly Full Suspension (that remains unchanged) The way Trek sees it the extra speed and easy power from a bigger wheelsize makes the 29er the perfect platform for the entry-level market, as well as the XC crowd too.

Moving away from the XC crowd towards the trail end of the market the Fuel EX has made a big upgrade this year in terms of wheel size.

SEE OUR POST ON THE FUEL 29er AND REMEDY 29er HERE

The Fuel EX 29 utilizes a 120mm suspension platform and revamped geometry and frame design to incorporate the bigger wheel size.

Jumping up a gear again, the Remedy range also sees a major update (See a review of the 2013 Remedy). Not just a 29er version but also, you've waited for it, yes a 27.5 version too. This sparks a new deabte, 650b, 27.5, what are we gonna call it?  With this choice in wheelsize, you get to decide which you would prefer according to how and where you ride. The 29er version is a long travel big-wheeled machine if ever there was one sporting 140mm of tuned front and rear suspension. The 27.5 version shares the same suspension platform, but obviously sports the smaller wheel size.

The Slash is back again and is a real all-mountain killer! This year it too gets the bigger wheeled treatment, yet retains the 150mm travel platform from last year. 27.5-inch wheels adorn the new bike which looks great in black and orange paint schemes.

TREK PROJECT ONE has hit the MTB world (look back to our post on it) which means you can spec your Superfly or Fuel EX anyway you want and match it with colors of your choice.

Obviously Trek World wouldn't be complete without mention of Bontrager and there are plenty of new things to get excited about from that camp too. The pumps are all looking good, and a new range of tires has been launched to compliment all the different wheel sizes. The SE4 Tire is a new Super Enduro Tire designed to be as tough as DH rubber yet fast and light enough to make pedalling a breeze.

Cycling Advice: Shifting Tips For A Better Cycling Experience

Quick And Easy Tips To Improving Your Shifting and Extending The Life Of Your Drivetrain

It is extremely important to learn how to use all of the equipment on your bike so that you can use it properly and get the longest life out of your investment. The Drivetrain and shifting mechanisms are no exception.

An important rule to remember is to reduce your applied pressure on the pedals during shifts. As drivetrains have seen many improvements over the years, and have been designed to shift no matter how much pressure is put on the pedals. However, if you ease up on the pressure just a bit, the shifts will be smoother and your chain, cogs and chainrings will last longer.

Here are some more tips to help keep your drivetrain in great working order:

Keeping Your Drivetrain Clean:

Before we even get into proper shifting, it is important to make sure you keep your drivetrain clean and tuned up to extend the life of your drivetrain. We have chain cleaners for sale in the shop that can help get your chain clean and keep it that way.

Every six months or so, inspect your chain and measure to see if it has been stretching.

Pick a chain pin on the top side and measure to any pin 12 inches away. Links are exactly one-inch long, so you should be able to measure exactly 12 inches between two pins. If the measurement is 12 1/8 inch or longer, it's time to replace the chain.

Related Post:  See our post all about how chains are made here!

(Check Your Cogs too!)

Remember: cogs wear out at about the same rate as the chain. If you put on a new chain, you will eventually run into skipping cogs - which is at best annoying and at worst dangerous!

Remember to keep the front rings and rear cogs clean. Stay on the lookout for a post about how to clean your chain and drivetrain!

On The Road Tips:

Shift Before Hills:

Even though the hardest place to put less pressure on your pedals is when you are struggling to get up a steep hill. Try changing gears before the steep part of the hill so you can make the shift with out stressing the chain and pedals.

Front Shifts:

Remember when you are shifting the front derailleur that the chainrings are significantly different in size! This means your derailleur has to work hard to move the chain from one to the other. If you can add some finesse to this shift, you are much more likely to get a clean, smooth shift. And, you'll eliminate problems associated with high pressure shifts such as having the chain come off.

There are three or four set spots (shift ramps/shift gates) on the chainrings to make it shift. The chain (while moving forward) needs to contact these ramps to be pulled up onto or down over the chainring. It is very important to hold the shift until the chain comes into contact with a shift ramp. When the chain is under load (meaning there is force on the pedals) this is the ony spot where the chain will shift. Ideally shifting should be done with little load on the chain. When the chain is under load the derailleur will just flex and laugh at you instead of making the shift happen. When there is no load on the chain the derailleur will be able to move it.

Getting Your Chain BACK On:

Usually, you can shift the chain right back on the chainring if it falls off. This is usually impossible when climbing a hill, as you will lose momentum and have to stop. However, any time you are riding and you can coast for a few seconds, you can almost always get the chain back on by gently pedaling and shifting the front derailleur to move the chain toward the ring.

(When a chain comes off repeatedly, something is wrong and you should have us take a look at the front derailleur adjustment.)

*NEW* 2014 Shimano Ultegra 6800 Groupset. "For Real World Riders"

2014 Shimano Ultegra 6800 Groupset is 100% Improved

photos courtesy: Shimano
For 2014, Shimano has released their Ultegra 6800 11-Speed Groupset. Dave Atkinson of road.cc interviewed Shimano's Mark Greshon. He has this to say about the new group: "Ultegra normally takes the latest technology from Dura-Ace and provides it at a much more competitive price. It's for real world riders who want good performance."

The 11-speed phenomenon with Shimano's engineering power to create this new system that "uses technology that's been proven in WorldTour races, proven at the highest level."
Riders can individually choose from a large variety of gearing options for all kinds of riding. You have the choice between a 11-23 and an 11-32 cassete, and chainring combos include 53-39, 52-36, 50-34, and cyclocross specific 46-36. The 6800 crank shares the same 4 arm design as the Dura-Ace in this category.
The brakes feature the same two axle symmetric pivot design as Dura-Ace as well, an improvement that Shimano claims increases power by about 16 percent. They are available in both a traditional and a direct mount version.

Using a shorter lever stroke which Shimano claims requires 35% less force input, gives tactile feedback to the rider that the shift has been completed. A defined *click* sound will ensure you that the gear has shifted. Improvements on ergonomics and control come from the more compact hoods and bracket grip, as well as a redesigned carbon lever.
The new wheel on the 11-speed level is the WH-6800. The wheel is lightweight on an offset rim for high rigidity and power transmission. Compatible in tubular, tube, and tubless setups. As with all Shimano wheels, the WH-6800 is 100% in-house produced and hand assembled.
The chain has also been redesigned for 11-speeds, and is coated with new surface technology called Sil-tec: an advanced surface painting technology adds a low friction surface treatment that runs smoother and lasts longer.

All in all the new groupset is 35g lighter, and 100% improved.

VIDEO - 2013 Trek Domane 4.0 — Dominate the Road!

The 2013 Trek Domane 4.0 is Absolutely Incredible

It is packed with amazing features for all you serious cyclists. To start, it's fully carbon and is designed for the racers that want a bike that goes just as fast as any other bike. The Domane but is built for comfort, even over unforgiving cobblestone roads.

In order to fulfill the needs of these racers, Trek has been working around the clock for years. Their engineers have come up with a design called "isospeed." Isospeed means that the seat tube is completely isolated from the rest of the frame to make the seat mast act like extra suspension without compromising the stiffness of the frame.

The bottom bracket is stiff and wide, which aids in acceleration despite the extra backward flex allowed by the seat mast. It's always a hassle when your chain comes off of your crank, but this year Trek has introduced a "chain keeper" to keep your chain in place even when you are at the top of your cadence.

At the end of the day, this bike is as comfortable as a touring bike, yet as fast as a racing bike. There's nothing better that a good two-in-one.

Come to Bumstead's to test ride this incredible machine. We are located at 1038 West 4th St. in Ontario. (909) 984-9067

2013 Trek WSD 7.6 FX! Review: Check it Out for Yourself at Bumstead's Bicycles

2013 Trek FX 7.6 WSD Women's Specific Roadbike

Trek knows that a great fitting bike is a joy to ride. They implement their Women's Specific Design to maximize comfort, stability, power and control. It's not hard to see why women love the 2013 Trek FX 7.6 WSD. Some may call it a fitness bike, but there is so much more to it.
Trek uses their standard Alpha Gold Aluminum frame, although this bike is anything but standard. To start, Trek engineers have spent more than a year designing what they call the IsoZone damping feature that absorbs road buzz at a critical point in the frame, effectively reducing rider fatigue. It kills vibration that the rider feels the most at a rate twice that of any other system on the market. To add to this comfortable feature, Trek also placed lightweight carbon fiber legs on the fork.

20 gears on an FSA Vero Crank and a Shimano drivetrain show that this bike isn't all about comfort. It's Shimano Deore 10 speed shifters are trigger actuated, making it amazingly easy to shift. The Shimano Tiagra front derailleur and Deore Shadow rear derailleur to make compatibility a non-issue.

What else could you need? Stopping power! Tektro RX 1.0 brakes are easy to adjust, and the levers can be fine tuned to brake as hard or soft as you need.

Come to Bumstead's Bicycles today to check out this incredible fitness bike. We are located at 1038 W. 4th Street in Ontario California. You can reach us by phone at (909) 984-9067 and visit our website for more information www.bumsteadsbikes.com

2013 Trek Madone 2 Series is Even More Incredible than Last Year!

For years, the Trek Madone was a leading carbon fiber road racer used by local riders as well as Lance Armstrong.  The light weight and advanced design of the Madone carbon frame gave cyclists a big performance edge over others not as lucky to be riding this bike.  Trek has recognized the need to bring the design of the Madone down to a lower price point so for 2013, Trek is introducing two Madone models in aluminum.  The Madone 2.1 and 2.3 deliver a lot of the benefits of their carbon big brother but at half the price.

Equipped with a carbon fork and seat post and Shimano 105 10 speed components the Madone 2 series is perfect for racing, triathlons, weekend group rides or that early Saturday morning ride by yourself where you just want to see where the road takes you.

We are located at 1038 W. 4th Street (4th and Mountain) in Ontario and our phone number is (909) 984-9067.  If you have questions about the 2013 Madone, give us a call or drop by the shop and check them out in person.

Looking to get into Mountain Biking? Try the 2013 Trek Mamba 29er! Awesome entry level mountain bike for 2013.

Trek pulls no punches with their 2013 Mamba 29er. If you’re just starting out in mountain biking, the Mamba 29er should be at the top of your prospective new bike list. 29er means that it has 29 inch wheels which makes the tracking incredible. These larger tires easily pass over rocks and ruts on those challenging mountain trails. The rims are double walled and eyeleted with a stainless steel washer, which makes them extremely strong and reliable.

Like most of their 2013 bikes, the Mamba features G2 geometry, giving you good handling at both high and low speeds. Trek has changed the front head tube and the shock crown angle so that it steers just as quick as a 26” wheel bike.

Enough about the specs of the bike; come to Bumstead’s Bicycles today so you can take a test ride. We are located at 1038 West 4th Street in Ontario. Or, if you feel like chatting, you can call us at (909) 984-9067.
