[VIDEO REVIEW] 2016 Trek Farley 5 - 27" x 4" Inch Tires!

Snow? Sand? Rocks? You Got This.

In this video, Lloyd shows you the features and tells you some of the specifications of the 2016 Trek Farley 5.

The tires are 27" x 4", and the bike can accomodate up to a 5" tire. Very wide rim, lots of tread on the tire - which gives you an amazing amount of traction. Normal mountain bike tires simply can not handle the types of terrain this bike was built for.

Why might you want a bike like this?

The large diameter of the rim and wide tire allows for a variety of tire pressures. You can lower the tire pressure to the point where you basically have suspension! The approximate one inch of "give" makes the bike feel much more comfortable accross rough terrain, even though the bike is completely rigid.

Disc brakes, Shimano/SRAM shifters/drivetrain and bontrager seat, seatpost, handlebar, grips, and stem.

Come in to Bumsteads Bicycles today to see this bike and many others from Trek!

2015 Trek Fuel EX Series - Choose Your Adventure

Fuel EX continues to set the bar for full suspension trail bike versatility, bringing race-day tech to all-day adventure.

The Fuel EX is categorized as a ‘trail’ bike, which essentially means that it favors uphill and downhill equally, and the geometry numbers reflect this. A reasonable 68-degree head angle allows for tight handling on undulating terrain, but maintains stability when things get a bit steep. The chainstays and bottom bracket also hit a nice happy medium between agility and stability.

Like most of its models, Trek offers the Fuel EX many, so make sure to ride a couple sizes to hone in on what fits you best.

2015 Trek EX 5 29
There are two grades of aluminum frames available for the five most economical models (one for the EX 5 and 6, and another for the EX 7, 8, and 9). The higher-end Fuel EX 9.7, 9.8 and 9.9 share the same carbon front triangle, but have different rear ends—the 9.7 has aluminum stays, the 9.8 has carbon seatstays and aluminum chainstays, and the 9.9 has a full carbon rear. Trek claims the frames weigh from 5.3 pounds to 3.9 pounds and all models come in six sizes between 15.5 to 23 inches.

Additionally, each frame features a tapered head tube, press-fit bottom bracket, thru-axle-compatible rear dropouts, magnesium rocker link, and a guard on the downtube to protect against rock strikes. The EX 7 through 9.9 have internal cable routing, ISCG 05 chainguide tabs, and internal and external dropper-post routing. The carbon models have a removable front-derailleur mount for 1x drivetrains.

The EX 7 through 9.9 also are equipped with Trek's proprietary, Fox-built DRCV (dual rate control valve) shock with dual air chambers. Trek says DRCV combines the control and small-bump compliance of a small-volume shock with the big-hit plushness of a larger air can.

Without a doubt, the RE:aktiv damper is the key piece, or heart, of the updated Trek Fuel series. The technology was first taken to the trails mostly as an external addition to Trek's already established DRCV, until such a time that Trek and Penske were happy with the ride characteristics. Once they reached this point the shock was passed along to the clever tech team at Fox, in order to make the technology ready to build for the masses.

This partnership resulted in a damper that has the ability to create a solid platform for both rider and smaller external inputs, yet when a larger velocity impact occurs, the valves open and the suspension takes action. This is different to the more common tactic of shutting off the valves altogether, or at least heavily restricting their ability to allow oil through, and it grants riders a little of the best of both worlds. A strong platform to mash on, but retaining the ability to smoothen out the trail and theoretically, retain traction when climbing more technical terrain.

"Never before have I ridden a bike that is as capable on the descents as it is on the climbs. Being more of a climber, the climbing aspect appealed to me more than most - could it climb? Hell yes it could, and preferably in the most hellish terrain imaginable. I found the Fox Performance Suspension easy to set up as well as fine tune for certain courses or riding locations." - Joey Esterhuyzen; BikeRoar.com

2015 VeloNews Buyer's Guide: 2015 Trek Silque SLX

2015 Endurance Bike for Women that are Occasional Racers, Century Riders, and Serious Weekend Warriors

Endurance bikes are designed to be the comfortable cousin of traditional road bikes. The bike will still be light, efficient, and powerful, but with a little more emphasis on comfort. These bikes have a slightly relaxed geometry and frames designed to be smooth and light, instead of just light. For example, compared to traditional road bikes, the handlebars on endurance bikes are closer to the level of the seat height instead of below, allowing for a more upright position, and the wheelbase is a bit longer to create a more stable ride.

The Silque's new geometry is built around a taller head tube, shorter top tube, shorter chain stays and a racier fork than the Domane, yet they still share the IsoSpeed decoupler technology and all the comfort that brings. There is no doubt the Silque firmly treads the ground between and also overlaps both race machine and comfy endurance bike genres.

The frame is beautifully made from Trek's high end OCLV 6 Series carbon and comes ready prepped for electronic gears, with ports for cable routing and internal battery position in the seat mast, perfect should you wish to upgrade later. The high-tech carbon composition gives the Silque a very different ride feel from the Domane.

Check out our video on the Trek Silque SL

Roadcc.com's Verdict:

Compliant, versatile and light; could easily hold its own in a race or head out for a full day in the hills

2015 Trek Domane 6.9 Disc Review, Features and Specs - Bumsteads Bicycles

Dont endure. Conquer.

The Domane 6.9 Disc may use the original Domane mold but with heavy re-tooling around the drop-outs the take away is something significantly different than what we experienced with the original Domane or the Classics Edition.

Boasting Shimano’s R785 hydraulic Di2 disc brakes and levers adds incredible stopping power and single finger modulation, but when its combined with additions like front and rear thru axles, fender mounts, and a host of Trek specific proprietary features the Domane Disc easily becomes the most versatile machine in Trek’s line.

The amount of torsional rigidity provided by the thru-axles was surprising and eye-opening at how much flex there really is with a standard quick-release design. Otherwise, the 6.9 felt like a Domane with an excellent ride quality, thanks to the IsoSpeed decoupler that creates a pivot point between the seat tube and top tube joint in order to greatly improve compliance.

Contructed from the proven 600 Series OCLV Carbon frame, with race-optimised cable routing,Trek IsoSpeed decoupler gives you an incredibly smooth ride with exceptionally stable geometry and flawless gear shifting.

Grand Fondos, centuries, long rides on not-so-smooth roads? The Domane is your bike. Crushing the competition over Europe's cobbles? Well, that's Fabian's thing. And now it's yours as well.

Bumsteads TOP Bikes – 2015 Trek Marlin 6 29

Ready For The Challenges on the Trail and a Full Mountain Biking Experience? You're Ready for Marlin.

When a bike this fun comes along, you jump on it. Trek's Marlin 6 makes entry level fast and fun with a playful aluminum frame and size-appropriate wheels.

Up front, the suspension fork gives you 100mm of travel, it laughs at trail obstacles and keeps you out of trouble. Then, add the 24-speed Shimano drivetrain, a host of reliable Bontrager parts and powerful Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and you're in for years of riding. You may want to call in sick tomorrow, the trail is calling.

— Hydraulic disc brakes offer simply the best stopping power around, regardless of the weather conditions you can come to a stop within an instant

— Alpha silver aluminium frame and Suntour suspension fork help offer a light-weight and highly rugged design which is ready for just about any trail out there!

— Rack & mudguard mounts make kitting out the Marlin for every day use an easy and quick job!

One of the biggest and still on-going debates in the Mountain Biking scene is what is the best Wheel Size? Every rider wants to know which size is best for their size and the terrain they will be riding, but don’t have the chance/funds to properly test out all the options, this is where Smart Wheel Size technology comes in…

After countless hours of testing and data analysis Trek have come to a conclusion on what wheel size each rider should be using. For the smaller riders out there the 27.5" option is the far superior option, this is because the 29" option is typically too large for the rider to receive the full benefits of its speed and handling, basically it is all about riding the fastest wheel possible that fits.

This system helps you focus more on the actual performance of the frame, rather than focusing firstly on the wheel size then the frame. This ensures you get the ride you are exactly looking for without all the previous hassle!

Here are the Specs for the 2015 Trek Marlin 6

Frame: Alpha Silver Aluminum with semi-integrated head tube, rack and fender mounts, G2 Geometry on 29ers

Rims: Bontrager AT-550 36-hole

Tires: Bontrager XR1, 29x2.20" front, 29x2.00" rear (Bontrager XR2, 27.5x2.20")

Shifters: Shimano Altus M310, 8 speed

Front Derailleur: Shimano Altus

Rear Derailleur: Shimano Altus M280

The Remedy 9.8 combines the Pike fork with the DRCV damper for an effective suspension package.
The Remedy 9.8 combines the Pike fork with the DRCV damper for an effective suspension package.

The RE:aktiv design is essentially Penske's regressive compression damper shrunk down and stuffed into the FOX Float
CTD shock. It consists of a completely different main piston design that, in very simple terms, employs a spring loaded
valve that can open to allow a lot of oil flow through the compression shim assembly. However, when the valve is closed
the damper provides added low-speed compression for more efficient pedalling and, more importantly in my mind, more
low-speed control that helps to keep the shock from pitching through its stroke when you're on the brakes or throwing
your bodyweight around. This idea is to preserve the bike's handling.

"When the valve starts opening you'll get very quick relief because there's a lot of flow area exposed extremely quickly before it regains control. That's the regressive element that you're feeling,'' Jose Gonzalez, Trek Suspension Engineer, explained to Pinkbike.

''As the velocity increases, the spring tries to work against that force, but at some point the force overcomes the spring to allow for a lot of flow, so there's no harshness. At the same time, because you've got the flow area constantly varying depending on the force that's pushing on the spring, as well as the ports that the oil has to then flow through, you get high-speed resistance as the velocity increases.''

The new boost148 rear hum, with a 148mm spacing it builds into stronger wheel.
The new Boost 148 rear hub, with 148mm spacing builds into a stronger wheel.

Boost 148 refers to, as you might have guessed, 148mm spacing of the rear axle. Trek says that this wider spacing has allowed them to move the hub's spoke flanges out farther, which then gives the spokes a better bracing angle to make for a laterally stiffer wheel.

Moving the cassette outwards by a few millimeters does upset the bike's chain line, though, so all Boost 148 equipped bikes will come with a slightly different crank spider that compensates by also moving the 'ring outwards slightly to match the change at the rear of the bike - note that Q-factor is not affected, and the crank arms and chain ring haven't changed, only the spider.

The 29″ version will be available in two builds, (Remedy 9 29″ and Remedy 9.8). Both model use the new Boost148, which claims to provide the same stiffness as 27.5″ wheels.

Trek Slims Madone Road Bikes - Keeps Madone 7-series (Carbon) and the 2-series (Aluminum)

2015 Trek Madone 2.1 - Entry Level Aluminum Road Bike

Trek has limited the 2015 Madone range to the top-end carbon 7-series and aluminium 2-series bikes, giving greater prominence to this entry point to the Madone pedigree. This follows the introduction of the ultra-light Trek Emonda and Trek's continued emphasis on the sportive-friendly Domane.

It has an Alpha 200-series (Trek’s premium alloy) aluminium frame that's based on the carbon Madones. It includes the KVF (Kammtail Virtual Foil) down tube shape – a flatter profile on the back of tube to improve aerodynamics – and internal gear cabling. The frame also has a wide BB86.5 bottom bracket, which houses the bearings inside the bottom top shell, and allows a chunkier down tube and stiffer platform for power transfer. The all-up weight is 8.9kg.

The H2 fit of the 2-series Madones isn’t as racy as the company’s H1 setup – our 54cm sample has a 150mm head tube – but it strikes a nice balance between head-down racing bikes and more upright endurance-focused machines.

The tapered fork also has KVF shaping on the rear of the legs, and is carbon with an alloy steerer. It includes a SpeedTrap module for transmitting speed and distance data to a head unit via a traditional magnet attached to the spoke. There are hidden mudguard mounts behind both the front and rear dropouts.

Last year’s 10-speed Shimano 105 levers with Tiagra cassette are now 105 11-speed (with an 11-28 cassette) 105 derailleurs. There’s no 105 crankset though – instead the Madone 2.1 is specced with a black RS500 chainset (50/34t), which retains Shimano’s older five-bolt set-up.

The Bontrager TLR tubeless-ready wheels have low-profile, rounded rims, and are shod in Bontrager R1 Hard-Case Lite 23mm tires.

You'd expect the aluminium seatpost at this price point, although it may be the first thing to put on your upgrade list. The second being the unbranded dual-pivot brakes. Even with these concessions, the Madone 2.1 could well prove to be a smart choice at this competitive price point – if its frame lives up to its name.

2015 Trek Slash Review and Pictures

2015 Trek Slash -

Now Trek is Just Showing Off

(Article and Pictures from mtbr.com)

Trek Slash 99 Side

Trek impressed us this year with the Slash all mountain bike sporting 27.5 wheels
and 60mm of travel. Although the bike was meant for the most demanding
World Series Enduro races, we enjoyed the big sweet spot of the bike as it
excelled in many types of riding conditions. The adjustable geometry with
Mino Link enabled us to lower/raise the BB height and affect the head angle as well.

The Fox Talas fork with 130/160mm of travel allowed the bike to tackle flattish,
tight singletrack too as the 66 degree head angle could be steepened to
about 68 degrees.

But we were left to wonder about the possibilities of a carbon frame,
a Pike fork or those new Talas 36 forks. What if?

Well our questions have been answered as Trek showed us the five new
2015 Slash models. The 9.8 has a carbon front triangle and it weighs one lb.
less than aluminum. The 9.9 has an all carbon frame for a 1.4 lb. weight
savings over aluminum. Two of them are carbon and two are aluminum.

Trek Slash 9.9 Rear Triangle

A big shift is all the models now sport a RockShox Monarch Plus DebonAir rear
shock instead of the Fox DRCV shock. RockShox has made huge strides in
its rear shock development and Trek felt comfortable that switching to these
new shocks would improve their bike. The main improvement is the Monarch
Plus has an external oil reservoir and with higher oil volume, more consistent
performance can be achieved on the longest and most demanding descents.

In addition, the new RockShox shocks offer excellent damping support in its
sagged position. Thus even in the wide open mode, the shock is an efficient
pedaler with great control throughout its travel. The spring rates of these
increased air volume DebonAir cans, mimic the ones of the twin chamber
Fox DRCV units as well. So the bike’s ride characteristics are maintained.

27.5 wheels mated with XR4 tires give these bikes excellent traction
on a broad range of conditions. The lower three bikes sport Bontrager wheels,
while the 9.9 model is spec’d with DT Spline One wheels. All the bikes use
RockShox Pike forks with adjustable travel, except for the 9.9,
which uses the fascinating new Fox 36 Talas fork with 130/160mm travel.

Trek Slash 9.9 Crank

The 9.9 model features a Shimano 1×11 drivetrain. Early reports are the
chain stays on very well with no chain guide.

Trek Slash 9.8 Side

The 9.8 model retails for $5769 and it sports a carbon front triangle
and 1×11 drivetrain

Trek Slash 9.8 Crank

The 9.8 is a looker and a decent value.

Trek Slash 7 and 8

The Trek Slash 7 and 8 are 2×10 bikes with the Trek Slash 9 (not shown)
offered in 1×11. The Trek Slash 7 is the one on top in blue color.

Trek Slash with Fox Talas 36

The Trek Slash 9.9 has Shimano 1×11 drivetrain and the very rare
Fox 36 Talas with 130/160mm of adjustable travel.

2015 Trek 27.5 EX and Lush Announced

Trek Unveils Fuel EX 27.5, Partners with Fox and Penske for RE:aktiv ShockFor 2015, Trek will offer the EX with 27.5in wheels in three alloy-frame builds, as well as carbon versions at the 9.8 and 9.8 levels.

The Fuel EX 9, 9.8 and 9.8 will also come equipped with Trek’s new RE:aktiv suspension technology co-developed with Fox and Penske Racing Shocks.

This new shock uses Trek’s proprietary DRCV air spring and adds damper technology that boosts low-speed compression to improve pedaling performance while allowing the shock to handle larger, high-velocity impacts without feeling harsh.

The women's counterpart to the Fuel EX, the Lush, will also be available with 27.5in wheels.

From Bike Rumor:

The biggest difference that sets the RE:aktiv shock apart from the pack is the inclusion of what Trek and Penske refer to as regressive damping. Most mountain bike suspension is either progressive or digressive, while regressive damping is supposedly true F1 technology that has trickled down to Indy car, NASCAR, and now, well mountain bikes. On the track, regressive damping provides firm support on the straights and corners but as soon as it encounters a bump, the shock instantly opens up to plush, smooth progression. This all happens extremely fast and as Trek points out, “delivers on the unrealized potential of an inertia valve.”

Once Trek and Penske had worked out the damping they wanted to incorporate into the RE:aktiv shock, Fox was brought in to package it into a patent-pending exclusive design only for Trek bikes.
“The thing about Penske is they’re completely focused on being a racing company. So what we’re doing is leveraging their R&D resources and turning that into almost an extension of our own capabilities,” said Trek Director of Suspension Development Jose Gonzalez. “The combined effort with Fox providing the production expertise has produced just an outstanding shock.”

Of course, the bike is fitted with amazing characteristics all around.

Other full suspension systems firm up under braking, reducing your control when you need it most. Trek’s patented Active Braking Pivot solves that by keeping your suspension active whether you're on the brakes or off.

Most suspension systems attach the bottom of the shock to a fixed frame mount. That fixed mount can contribute to a harsh ride. We solved that with Full Floater, attaching the shock to two moving linkage points so it can better respond to bumps across a wide variety of terrain. It feels like more travel, but it's not. It's smarter travel.

E2 is the evolution of the traditional 1-1/8" headset to a tapered head tube, fork, and headset system. E2 tapers from a 1.5" lower to a 1-1/8" upper headset to provide more material where it matters most, resulting in a stronger, lighter frame with point-and-shoot control.

EVO Link is Trek’s evolution of the rocker link from the plate-and-bolt style used on most suspension bikes to a one-piece rocker link. This lighter link provides a stronger connection point between the front and rear triangles, creating a stiffer frame for greater control with minimal weight.

Dropper posts are great for while-you-ride seat height adjustments, but cable routing has always been an issue. RockShox Reverb Stealth routes the hydraulic housing directly through the frame for the sleekest setup you've seen.

Our robust and confidence-inspiring rear thru axle is about 35% stiffer than an open dropout design. And now, a thru axle wheel change is actually quick and easy, thanks to a tabbed guide in the frame's dropout.
