2014 Trek 1 Series Look More and More Like High End Bikes

For 2014 Trek has impressed us by giving every Trek 1 series frame a carbon fork. The frame remains Aluminum, but it has been redesigned. The down tube now comes with a curved leading edge and a truncated trail. It's chopped off square at the back in a similar way to the KVF tubing that Trek use on their Madone and Speed Concept bikes. Three different 1 series are available: 1.5, 1.2, and 1.1.

The 1.1 is the cheapest road bike that Trek produces. 100 Series Alpha Aluminum frame with a Trek carbon road fork, Shimano 2300 8-speed drivetrain with Vuelta Corsa, 50/34 (compact) crankset, Bontrager Approved alloy rims and Bontrager T1 700x23c tires.

Other features of the 1 Series include Rack and fender mounts, H2 Geometry and Shimano Claris (1.1), Shimano Sora (1.2) and Shimano Tiagra (1.5) front and rear derailleurs. Bontrager fills out the rest of the componentry to keep it light on your wallet too. Strong, light, exhilirating, and race ready.

Trek 2014 Time Trial Bike Mixes Fashion and Function

 

Speed Concept

For the time trial stages, Trek has the Speed Concept. The bike has been around for a good few years now, but had an update last year (for the 2014 model year) to reduce the weight by a claimed 437g. Trek reckon the aerodynamics and reduced frontal area have improved its performance across a range of yaw angles.

The Speed Concept heralded in Trek’s Kammtail Virtual Foil (KVF) tube profiles that see the trailing edge chopped off, tricking the air into acting as if it's still there. The tube shaping has been tweaked on the new frame, and they have added fillet’s between the main frame tubes to increase side surface area to reduce drag at higher yaw angles. This also stiffens the frame.

Trek have reduced the frontal area - down 30% they say - and taken material from the seat tube and down tube - all without any reduction in stiffness, according to Trek's men in lab coats. All cables are routed internally, and the battery for a Shimano Di2 groupset is housed inside the frame.

Parts and components

With Trek supplying the frames, Bontrager will supply the wheels, stems, handlebars, saddles and tyres. They’ll be using the tubular Aeolus 3.0 wheelset for a lot of the regular road stages, going to deeper or shallower section rims dependent on conditions, course profile and rider preferences.

We’ve seen a few new products coming out recently as a direct result of the team involvement - you get an awful lot of feedback from guys doing 30,000km of riding and racing every year, and to product developers that's invaluable. The pros can also be very fussy, and with personal sponsorship deals for saddles less common these days, this can lead to new saddle models being introduced. A case in point is the Serano saddle launched last December, first spotted on Andy Schleck early last year.

And we've seen the new helmet that will be ideal for the Spring Classics, the Bontrager Velocis AW. It's the same as the regular Velocis helmet, just with a new one-piece shell with the vents all blocked up to prevent rain and cold wind getting in. The helmet will only be available through the Trek Race Shop, the outlet for limited runs of equipment built specifically for the Trek Factory Racing team.

Shimano will continue to support the team, and will supply most of the team with its top flight Dura-Ace Di2 11-speed groupset. However, not all are happy to switch to electronic, and Cancellara prefers to remain on a mechanical Dura-Ace groupset. 

Once again, German tyre manufacturer Schwalbe will supply the team with tyres. With the company heavily investing in tubeless tyres with the excellent Ultremo and more recent One (which it reckons is the fastest tyre it has ever produced) and Bontrager producing tubeless-ready rims, it’ll be interesting to see if any of the team ride tubeless throughout the season.

World's First Human Powered Helicopter

The American Helicoptor Society's Igor I. Sikorsky had offered a $250,000 prize for anyone who could create a human-powered Helicopter. 

Aviation history was made on June 13th by the Canadian Aero Velo team. From humble Kickstarter-funded beginnings, this team is largely comprised of students from the University of Toronto. 

The Sikorsky Prize represents a monumental challenge that requires a level of aerodynamic efficiency that is unheard of in commercial helicopters. A successful Sikorsky Prize helicopter will be able to hover on less than one horsepower.

"No one knows better than we do the enormously difficult engineering and human performance challenges that must be overcome in order to meet these flight requirements." the team said in a statement. "We salute this historic accomplishment of the AeroVelo team and the intense dedication, innovation, research and hard work we know it required."

The team’s quad-copter design was created from a frame made of carbon-fiber/Vectran while the blades of the Atlas were made from polystyrene, balsa wood and polyester film. These elements were then tied together by a bicycle at the center of the machine. Dr. Todd Reichert, one of the leaders of the team, pedaled to lift the AeroVelo Atlas for 64.11 seconds. The craft reached an altitude of 10.8 feet and drifted only 32 feet during the flight, which took place on June 13 inside a field house in Vaughan, Ontario.

[REVIEW] 2014 Trek Superfly 8 - Bumstead's Bicycles

Trek's Superfly line of mountain bikes raises the bar for 29er hardtail MTB performance.  

The Superfly 8 is the highest level aluminum bike in the line-up, and it was bred with racing in mind. It's speed is only half the story though; it's handling and specs make it fully capable when the trail get's rowdy. Trek's Alpha Platinum Aluminum frame is hydroformed to create the most sophisticated shapes for the lightest weight, and are finished using Trek's smooth-weld finishing process. The frame is equipped with G2 geometry and a 100 mm Float up front to lead the way as fast as possible. The bike looks clean and simple thanks to sleek ports at the head tube and near the seat tube, allowing you to run your derailleur housing directly through the frame, keeping the cable protected from the elements and your bike running smooth, clean and quiet.


Eric Melson of Blister Gear Review said this of the Superfly's riding characteristics:

"Right away, I noticed the lateral rigidity of the press-fit bottom bracket and the thru-axle rear end. The power transfer was very impressive, something that's especially noticeable when I'm standing for long periods of time or during short, punchy climbs when I drop a gear and mash.

My position while climbing is low, and I lean forward over the front wheel, which helps me power up steep grades. This bike likes to spin, and if you've got the lungs, you can cover some serious ground in the hills. ... I'm confident making techy moves and lifting the front end thanks to the bike's relatively short chainstays, and overall I've appreciated its snappiness and solid power transfer."

The front fork of the 2014 Superfly 8 is the Fox Evolution Series 32 Float w/CTD, damper, 15QR thru axle, custom G2 geometry with 51mm offset and an optional 100mm of travel. When climbing or sprinting, simply turn the lockout switch to the "locked out" position to maintain all the power of your stroke. When descending, turn the lockout to the "fully open" position to eat up most of the bumps and keep you rooted in the ground, rather than be readily tossed in the air. Of course, the 29 inch wheels help with that as well.

Next, the drivetrain is composed of Shimano SLX with a Deore XT Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur, making chain slap and dropped chains a thing of the past. A 2x10 drivetrain gives you plenty of gears to use while saving some weight. The SLX hydraulic disc brakes stop you well, even in muddy or wet conditions. Plus, the newly designed levers are practically a joy to squeeze. Plus, the rear brake caliper is integrated into the chain/seat stays (intended to increase stiffness).

Tubeless-ready wheels, SLX discs and Bontrager Race Lite controls top everything off nicely. Speed, efficiency and fun: Your Superfly awaits!
