Simpler, Lighter, and More Durable SRAM Rival 1 Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Brand New 1x11 SRAM Rival 1 Groupset Revealed

SRAM first ditched the front derailleur and offered a dedicated 1x11 single ring and wide-range cassette drivetrain to mountain bikers a few years back, where it has been well received.

Initially available for the cyclocross market with Force CX1, it is now offered to road cyclists with Force 1, and as featured here, Rival 1, with a wider choice of chainring and cassette options.

SRAM reckons there are many applications where the new groupset will be well suited. It’s in the emerging gravel and adventure markets that this new groupset will most likely find its fans, but also fitness, commuting, touring and triathlon bikes too will find this 1x suitable.

The Rival 1 groupset features several key bits of technology. The X-Sync chainring has alternating wide and narrow teeth that provide a more secure engagement with the chain. The rear derailleur houses a clutch mechanism that controls chain slap, and works with the chainring to (hopefully) avoid the chain dropping, handy when tackling gravel paths. The technology has been proven in the mountain bike world, so there’s no reason to suspect it won’t provide similarly impressive results on the road.

SRAM is offering a wide range of chainring sizes, from 38 to 50 on Rival (up to 54 on Force). There's a choice of cassettes as well, up to and including the 11-36 that we’ve got on test here, which is compatible with a regular 11-speed freehub. There’s even a whopping 10-42t cassette, but that requires a special XD freehub body, so a new set of wheels is needed. With this cassette and an 46t chainring though, SRAM reckons it provides a slightly wider gear range than a 50/34 compact double with an 11-25 cassette.

Take A Peek At Trek's Newest 2016 Models: Slash and Remedy

Having released all of their major new models earlier this summer, the biggest news coming out of Trek World is their new direct-to-consumer online sales program, which seems to do an admirable job of keeping the dealer in the loop.

For bikes, they’ve already released their new Madone aero road race bike for the Tour de France team to use. On the dirt, their pros have been racing the completely redesigned Top Fuel and ProCaliber SL, and the Fuel EX got the Boost 148/110 upgrade.

What remained to be seen was what they’d do with their Remedy and Slash platforms. The Remedy 29ers were the first to get Boost, ushering in the latest standard craze, and those carry over with Boost on both ends of the bike. We hear one model might even get the Fox 36 fork. Here, though, we have the 27.5″ bikes, including a new women’s model, all of which keep the standard 12×142 rear end…

Shown up top of the post is the Slash 7, and spec is directly above.

The Slash 8 upgrades to a SRAM GX1 1×11 group with 2-position Pike fork and better brakes.

A lot of folks expected the Remedy 27.5 bikes to grow into a Boost format, but our man on the scene in Wisconsin says that’s not the case. But, there is a lot of purple going around.

There’s now a women’s Remedy 27.5 mountain bike, presumably (hopefully) with appropriately tuned suspension and cockpit dimensions. Other than that, the spec is similar to the regular Remedy models.

Which 2016 Trek Bike is REPLACING the Superfly?

The 2016 Top Fuel Is Trek's New Full-Suspension Race MTB

The bike that ruled the podium at the height of mountain bike racing is back to reclaim the top step. Refined and reinvigorated with new technology, Top Fuel is the fastest bike on the trail.

Like the longer travel Fuel EX, the 100 mm travel Top Fuel uses an EVO rocker link and Full Floater suspension design, which attaches the shock to two moving points. It also has Active Braking Pivot and the geometry adjusting Mono Link nuts that connect the seatstay to the EVO link. This changes head tube angle by half degree and raises or lower the bottom bracket by 8 mm, going from a 70-degree head angle and 12.9 inch bottom bracket in low to 70.9-degress and 13.4-inches in high. This brings to the short travel bike the technology Trek has been using for its long travel bikes, a design that has become one of the best available.

The Top Fuel also has Boost 148/110 hub spacing, Smart Wheel Size and Control Freak cable management. Boost, which was developed in part by Trek last year for its long travel bikes, creates a better and stronger 29-inch wheel. Boost also provides more tire clearance and gave Trek the opportunity to shorten the chainstays by 17 mm compared to the Superfly. At 148 mm, which is as wide as you can go without affecting Q factor, width is maximized without making the bike wider at the bottom bracket. By going 110 mm on the fork the front end is equaled to the rear in terms of strength, stability and the ability to run a bigger tire.
